If you just got copies of The Sims and some EPs, don’t just install everything yet. The reason why is that there is a particular order you have to install the game and its EPs to have it all working correctly. If you install everything incorrectly, your game will glitch. To help you avoid this very problem, The Sims Depot has pulled together the following install order guide for new players, as well as returning players whose memories might be a little fuzzy.

If Your Base Game Disk is the Original Sims 1.0 Disk

EA put out multiple base game versions of The Sims. The first was the original game, which only contained basic game play. If you have this version and just want to install this and additional EPs, they have to be installed exactly in this order:

  1. The Sims
  2. Livin’ Large
  3. House Party
  4. Hot Date
  5. Vacation
  6. Unleashed
  7. Superstar
  8. Makin’ Magic

To play the game, play with the last EP you installed. For example, if the last EP you installed is Unleashed, run the game with the Unleashed installation disk. If the last EP you installed is Vacation, play with the Vacation installation disk. Don’t play with the base game disk; otherwise, you’ll get an error.

If Your Base Game is Deluxe

The Sims Deluxe was the first bundle that EA put out of the game. It is the base game + Livin’ Large. So, when installing, you should install everything in this order:

  1. The Sims Deluxe
  2. House Party
  3. House Date
  4. Vacation
  5. Unleashed
  6. Superstar
  7. Makin’ Magic

Now, if you want to run the game, here is where things get a little confusing. Remember how in the earlier section it says not to play with the base game disk? Well, if you have Deluxe, you can run the game with the Deluxe disk…but only up through Unleashed.  With Superstar, you must use the Superstar disc. With Makin’ Magic, you must use the Makin’ Magic disk. The reason why is that Deluxe came out before Superstar and Makin’ Magic

If Your Base Game is Double Deluxe

The installation is the same as before–install Double Deluxe first, then the other EPs in the following order.

  1. The Sims Double Deluxe
  2. House Date
  3. Vacation
  4. Unleashed
  5. Superstar
  6. Makin’ Magic
If Your Base Game is Mega Deluxe

Install Mega Deluxe first, then the other EPs in the following order.

  1. The Sims Mega Deluxe
  2. Vacation
  3. Unleashed
  4. Superstar
  5. Makin’ Magic
In Summary

If you’re new to The Sims 1.0. and want it to run effectively, it’s very important that you install everything in the correct order. Otherwise, you’ll run into glitches that will make the game unplayable.
