Learn how to use Yahoo! Groups to download custom content from Saving the Sims.

Tutorial

  1. Sign In or Register for a Yahoo! account
You must have a Yahoo! account to use Yahoo! groups.  If you don’t have one, register at Yahoo! Otherwise, just log into your account.
  2. Click on Join Group Button
Browse to the Yahoo! group you want to download files from. You’ll see a purple button marked “Join Group.” Click on it to join the group. Joining the group is the only way you’ll be able to access its files.

  3. Step Three: Fill in Form
A new form will pop up. Fill in the details, then click “Send Request.” You’ll get confirmation that you are now a member of the group.

  4. Step Four: Look for “Files” Link
Now that you’re a member of the group you just registered for, you can browse and download any files it has hosted. To see them, go to the link on the group’s homepage marked “Files.”

The files will be in directory format, so you won’t be able to tell right off the bat what each file contains. However, many Yahoo! Groups added an image file in .gif format to allow members to see a preview of each file.

For example, if you look at the screenshot below, you will see that there’s an image file marked “liuslmvintviol.gif.”

By clicking on it, you will get to see an image preview of the liuslmvintviol.zip file, so you know that this is what you’ll be getting with that file.

That’s all there is to it! Yes, it’s a little cumbersome having to hunt and peck through files like this, but there are so many great Sims 1 objects being hosted at Saving the Sims that it’s worth the trouble, especially if you’re looking for special items like vintage cars and gabled roofs.

Troubleshooting

For some reason, when some people try to join a group, they get an error message that reads, “Your email address is not linked to a Yahoo ID. To join this group, you need to link your email address to a Yahoo account.”

If you get that message, do the following:

  1. At the Yahoo! Groups page, go to the left sidebar and click “All My Groups.”
  2. Click on the link that says, “Email Preferences.”
  3. You’ll get a list of the email addresses you have registered at Yahoo. If any one of them has “Bouncing” in bright red letters, click on “(unbounce).”
