Bugs and Glitches

Questions about bugs and glitches you may encounter in Sims 1.

  1. How come sometimes when all of my family members make the carpool, it will drive off and they’ll suddenly all be back at the house again as if they missed it?
  2. One of my Sims’ portraits all of a sudden got replaced by this weird upside down picture of a nerdy guy/ an evil-looking lady! Why?!
  3. Oh, no! I just installed Unleashed and noticed that whenever there’s a flood, the puddles go underneath the tables, sinks, tubs, or showers, and my sims can’t clean them up because the objects are in the way! What now?

Missed Carpool

How come sometimes when all of my family members make the carpool, it will drive off and they’ll suddenly all be back at the house again as if they missed it?

This is a weird quirk that seems to happen in the game whenever you have a house full of Sims. When the last Sim tries to rush for the carpool and misses it, sometimes the rest of the house members will magically reappear at the portal (mailbox/ trashcan), even though they all made the carpool on time. As a result, they will all miss a day of work. I have no idea why this happens– if Maxis planned it or what-have-you– but it’s one of those things you have no control over. If it happens, you can quit without saving to start the day over or simply have the sims do chores to pass the time. Heck– you may even want to throw a party!

Upside Down Head Syndrome

One of my Sims’ portraits all of a sudden got replaced by this weird upside down picture of a nerdy guy/ an evil-looking lady! Why?!

Congratulations! You have just been infected with UDHS! Upside Down Head Syndrome is a weird bug that happens when one of your sims’ character files gets corrupted. His or her portrait suddenly gets switched with one of the pictures you just mentioned. This bug has been around forever, and there is no official Maxis patch for it. Millennium Sims¬†posted had a cure for it, but you’ll have to download Iff Pencil¬†2 so you can play around with manually editing character files to get rid of the problem.

One warning, though– I find that the MillenniumSims cure doesn’t seem viable once you get past “Hot Date” in your EPs. For some reason, the garbled text you need to delete in the character file no longer appears once you get Hot Date. If that’s the case with you, an alternative solution is to delete the corrupted character, then go into the Export folder and reimport him or her back into your neighborhood. A pain the butt, I know (you lose your relationships), but it’s better than nothing!

Unleashed Puddles

Oh, no! I just installed Unleashed and noticed that whenever there’s a flood, the puddles go underneath the tables, sinks, tubs, or showers, and my sims can’t clean them up because the objects are in the way! What now?

You probably think this is a bug, but it isn’t– it was a planned part of the game. Maxis developers thought it would be a cool idea if they could make floods puddle underneath objects. (Because, in their own words, this made things more realistic.) Of course, this feature wound up being a major pain-in the-you-know-where, because cleaning up the puddles required people having to go into Buy/ Build Mode and move the objects so the sims could reach them. Apparently, there were enough complaints to have Maxis put out a patch for this new change. (Thank God!) You can find the patch under Get Cool Stuff at the official Sims 1 site.

Why are my women all of a sudden walking funny ever since I installed Unleashed?

The reason why is simple: the Maxis people decided to change the way the females walked in Unleashed. Instead of walking very daintily with their legs close together, they now walk with less femininity, with their shoulders hunched up slightly and leaning forward a little bit. Some Simmers hated this change so much, they nicknamed it the Gorilla Walk. Unfortunately, Maxis never came out with an official patch for it. However, you can find the patch for this at Simslice.com.
